Robert Salisbury Knight is a mid-career visual artist and writer.
After graduating university, Knight set out on a self-funded, 5 year journey around the world, outfitted with a camera, journal and few necessities. During this substantial nomadic odyssey, Knight was immersed in exploration whilst developing new pathways of seeing. A formative time of study, a deep commitment to process, and a lasting desire for creating was cultivated.
Knight’s photography first appeared in galleries in 1999 and for the past 25 years has maintained a gallery in Carmel, California, showcasing solo exhibits on a continuing basis.
The recipient of multiple awards in the world's most prestigious exhibitions including “Photographer of the Year," his photographic art has since been displayed in the finest museums internationally.
Six self-published oversized portfolio-set coffee table books have been created: "The American Landscape" (2003), "Seascapes" (2004), "Sage Wisdom" (2007), and "Wildlight" (2012), interweave both photographs and writings by the artist. Limited edition prints sets: "Spiritus" (2021), a collection of works from Asia, and "Antarctica" (2021) a collection of prints from the seventh continent are currently on display at the gallery.
The artist's interests span a range of subject matter and a variety of process and medium for creating work. His artwork has been described as "elemental, dreamlike, meditative, transcendental". Knight has a self-described “passion for honoring the natural world and commitment to exploring a common light that we share".
Knight is currently working on a writing project. In January 2026 he returns to Patagonia and Antarctica for a tenth expedition. With ongoing projects on the near horizon it is clear the inspiration and work is thriving. Knight's art is firmly established in the art aficionado community and his work is widely collected worldwide.
Knight is proud over the past 25 years to be actively involved in the community. He has created and donated over 80 framed photographs to Stanford Children's Hospital on an ongoing basis, in addition to the Boys and Girls Club of Monterey and numerous other causes.
An Aviator for 25 years with a passion for flight, Knight pilots both paragliders and planes. A daily yoga practitioner, Robert hopes one day to reach his toes.
He makes his home in Carmel, California with wife Anna, and children Emerson, Lillian and Wylder.
